The New Zealand board sailor Jon Paul Tobin has won the bronze medal at the RS:X world championships in Spain.

Strong winds meant no racing was possible the last two days, with Tobin finishing behind winner Julien Bontemps of France and Nick Dempsey of Great Britain.

Defending Olympic champion Tom Ashley, who missed out to Tobin for the London berth, was 29th place.

New Zealand failed to grab an Olympic spot in the women's event, with Natalia Kosinska the best placed in 19th.
