Auckland golfer Michael Hendry survived a potentially disastrous 16th hole at the Hills course in Arrowtown on Sunday to win the inaugural New Zealand PGA Pro-Am Championship by two strokes with a 16-under par total.

32-year-old Hendry recovered from four dropped shots on the short but notoriously difficult 16th hole to birdie the 17th hole and make par at the last.

Having been gifted a one-stroke lead on the 16th, the Australian Andrew Martin dropped a shot at the next hole, and ended up in a tie for second place with Wellington's Mark Brown.

Hendry has been successful in Asia in recent years, and his biggest win was the Indoesian Open in 2010.

He has a two-week break before his next event, the China Open, which is co-sanctioned by the One Asia and European tours.
