Jacko Gill gives up on qualifying for London Olympics

The world junior shot put champion Jacko Gill of Auckland has given up on competing at the London Olympics amid confusion over qualifying criteria.

Athletics New Zealand High Performance Director Scott Goodman concedes his organisation has played a part in Gill's decision to give up on London as it wasn't made clear what athletes needed to do to be named in the initial squad.

The four athletes named last week, shot putter Valerie Adams, runners Nick Willis and Kimberly Smith and javelin thrower Stuart Farquhar, had all met the A standard set by the athletics international governing body the IAAF.

Gill has met the B standard which places him in the top 16 in the world and was expected to be good enough for him to be confirmed in the New Zealand team later in the year.

But Gill says he couldn't train properly not knowing whether he was a confirmed starter or not and he'll instead focus on the world junior champs in Barcelona in July.
