The New Zealand track cycling team has won two bronze medals on the opening night of the World Championships in Melbourne.
The men's team pursuit quartet of Marc Ryan, Sam Bewley, Aaron Gate and Westley Gough beat Russia in the ride-off for bronze. Great Britain broke the world record in beating Australia in the final.
It is only the third medal won in the team pursuit at the world championships and the third bronze for Gough and Ryan who were in the pursuit combinations that won bronze medals in 2009 and 2010.
And the men's sprint team of Ethan Mitchell, Sam Webster and Eddie Dawkins qualified fifth, but then beat Japan for the bronze after Great Britain and Germany were disqualified.
Katie Schofield slipped at the start of the women's team sprint and while she and Natasha Hansen recovered to record their second best time ever, it was only good enough for 10th overall.
18-year-old Alex Frame from Christchurch finished an outstanding fourth place in the men's 15-kilometre scratch race, won by Team Sky sprinter Ben Swift.
Today New Zealanders compete in the women's team pursuit, Simon van Velthooven in the men's kilo time trial and Shane Archbold in the first day of the omnium.
