Soutland sprinter Eddie Dawkins has become the first New Zealander to duck under the ten second barrier in qualifying for the men's 200 metre sprint at the world track cycling championships in Melbourne.

The 22 year old clocked 9.96 seconds to join Matt Archibald, Sam Webster and Ethan Mitchell in the first round of elimination.

Dawkins was the only one of the four New Zealanders to progress to the second round where he was pipped by Britain's Beijing silver medallist Jason Kenny.

Meanwhile Timaru's Shane Archbold has finished fifth in the men's omnium while Christchurch's Jo Kiesanowski is in eighth place after the first day of the women's omnium.
