Kiwi to coach new South Africa Super Rugby franchise

The former Crusaders hooker Matt Sexton will coach the Southern Kings when they debut in the Super Rugby competition next season, the South African franchise has announced.

Sexton will take charge from July, guiding the Port Elizabeth-based team in the Currie Cup national championship ahead of their maiden southern hemisphere provincial competition appearance next February.

Current coach Alan Solomons becomes director of rugby and says 41-year-old Sexton was by far the best candidate for the job and has the capability to end up coaching New Zealand.

Sexton made 128 appearances for Canterbury, moved to Irish province Ulster when Solomons coached there, and is currently the academy manager for the Canterbury Rugby football union.

Sexton, who has not coached at Super or ITM Cup level in New Zealand, has a two-year contract with the franchise.
