Kiwis lose battle against history

12:10 am on 21 April 2012

Australia continued their ANZAC rugby league test hoodoo over New Zealand with a 20-12 victory at Eden Park on Friday night.

Hooker Issac Luke put the Kiwis in front 12 minutes in with a dart from dummy half and the home side led for 10 minutes before two Kangaroos tries in five minutes from Johnathan Thurston and Greg Inglis restored the normal state of affairs.

Even a sinbinning to Billy Slater for interfering with Alex Glenn after a deflected Shaun Johnson kick put the bench player through for a possible try didn't change anything, Thurston the next to score with a penalty on the stroke of half-time for a 14-6 lead.

But Shaun Johnson scored an end to end intercept try on debut after half-time to bring the score back to a two-point deficit, and that's how it stayed until the visiting skipper Cameron Smith scored with 11 minutes remaining in the same fashion as Luke from close range.
