New Zealand sevens to play Super Rugby curtain raiser

11:41 am on 24 April 2012

The New Zealand rugby sevens team will play Australia in a curtain raiser to Sunday's Super Rugby match between the Waratahs and the Crusaders in Sydney.

The Australian and New Zealand Sevens teams are coming together for the one-off international exhibition match that celebrates the Waratahs' home game theme of trans-Tasman rivalry.

The New Zealand sevens coach Gordon Tietjens says any match-up against their trans-Tasman rivals is always a great occasion and neither team takes the other lightly.

He says the match also provides a great chance to get some game time against a quality opposition before the New Zealand squad head to Britain for the final two legs of the World Series.

The full New Zealand sevens squad, as well as Bay of Plenty's Jack Wilson and Waikato's Joe Webber and Johnathon Malo, will travel to Australia for the match.

The team to travel to the final legs of the World Series in Scotland and England to be played over the following two weekends will be named after the match.
