English clubs move to curb spiralling losses

English football's second tier clubs have adopted rules designed to curb spiralling losses that threaten the survival of many teams outside the elite Premier League.

The rules will apply in the 24-team second division Championship, and clubs running up big losses to help win promotion to the Premier League will be heavily fined.

The 72 clubs below the Premier League have total debts of nearly one billion pounds.
