Volvo Ocean Race: Battle among top three

6:59 am on 30 April 2012

PUMA continue to lead from Team New Zealand's Camper and Telefónica in third on Leg six of the Volvo Ocean Race from Brazil to the USA .

This morning the leading three boats made a synchronised move towards Brazil, gybing to the west to pick up an advantageous current and hook into a wind bend around the coast.

PUMA navigator Tom Addis says his crew welcomes having CAMPER and Telefónica as stalking horses, but are keen to stretch their lead before crossing the Doldrums and picking up the stronger trade winds.

Telefónica watch captain Neal MacDonald believes the race is far from over despite the current spread of over 100 nm from first to fifth.

He says it could be anybody's race and says the boats are close enough that they can eat up miles pretty quickly.

Latest predictions suggest the leading boats should arrive in Miami on or around May 9.
