Byrne escapes another ban over comments about rival player

The Melbourne Rebels lock Adam Byrnes has been officially warned and fined almost $10,000 over his comments in the media about the Waratahs centre Tom Carter.

Byrnes was originally cited for eye gouging after the Rebels-Waratahs game but had the 10-week ban imposed overturned on appeal.

He then got into trouble with the judiciary for saying that Carter's claims had brought the game into disrepute, accusing him of "bringing another player down ... it's a very poor quality to have as a human being."

Byrne, who's Sydney-born but turned out for Russia at the World Cup thanks to his mother's heritage, made history with the case - the first time in SANZAR's history anyone has been cited for an offence against a player rather than against an official.
