Chaotic finish to Giro's third stage

7:39 am on 8 May 2012

There was a chaotic finish to the third stage of cycling's Giro d'Italia involving two of the favourites for the title.

Britain's world champon Mark Cavendish and the overall leader Taylor Phinney from the United States were brought down in the finishing straight, and while Cavendish was able to walk across the line, Phinney's tour could be over.

Most of the field were credited with the same time as the winner and the New Zealanders Jesse Sergent and Jack Bauer more or less retained their placings to be 10th and 17th overall, within 30 seconds of the lead.

There's a rest day tonight while the field travels from the first three stages in Denmark to complete the tour in Italy.
