NZ cyclists come through Giro crash unscathed

9:08 am on 8 May 2012

The New Zealand cyclists Jesse Sergent and Jack Bauer avoided a multiple crash at the end of the third stage on the Giro d'Italia last night to maintain their places in the top 20 on the world's second biggest tour.

In a bunch sprint at the end of the stage, the Italian Roberto Ferrari brought down several riders including Britain's world road race champion Mark Cavendish and the overall leader Taylor Phinney.

Cavendish, who lost a lot of skin in the 75 kilometre an hour crash, implied Ferrari should have been banned from the rest of the tour, but he's merely been relegated to last place by the race jury.

The race leading American Phinney was taken to hospital for treatment on his injured ankle and is expecting to resume the race after tonight's rest day while the tour moves from Denmark to Italy.
