McEwen calls time on cycling career

The Australian cyclist Robbie McEwen has retired after finishing the Tour of California, ending a 17-year professional career which included 12 Tour de France stage victories.

The 39-year-old from Brisbane was among the world's top sprinters at the peak of his career, in which he also won the Tour de France sprinters' classification three times and recorded 12 stage wins on both the Giro d'Italia and the Australian Tour Down Under.
