Aussie coach hails lifting move

The Australian netball coach Lisa Alexander has joined her New Zealand counterpart Wai Taumaunu in hailing the novel lifting defence as a great innovation, and she hasn't totally ruled out using it in test matches.

The Northern Mystics defender and volleyball player Anna Harrison pulled off some spectacular blocks following assisted lifts from a fellow defender in Sunday's trans-Tasman clash with the Vixens in Melbourne.

Alexander was among the spectators at Hisense Arena wowed by the move, which has rarely been seen in top flight netball, though it dates back to the 1970s.

Alexander says Australia had trialled the tactic at training under her predecessor Norma Plummer.

The move has generated plenty of comment about its legality, but Netball Australia says while the tactic is unorthodox, it's not illegal.
