The unseeded home player Virginie Razzano has pulled off a major upset at the French Open, eliminating the American tennis great Serena Williams in the opening round in Paris.
Razzano seemed to be cruising to victory with a 5-0 lead in the deciding set, but Williams fought back to 3-5 before the Frenchwoman won a marathon ninth game to take the deciding set 6-3.
It's the first time in 47 Grand Slam tournaments that Williams has lost in the first round.
The fifth seed had been two points away from a straight sets victory at 5-1 up in the second set tiebreaker before she lost six straight points.
