The New Zealand Formula Renault 3.5 driver Richie Stanaway sustained fractured vertebrae in his crash in Sunday's rain-affected race at Spa in Belgium.

The 20-year-old reported via his Twitter feed that he would require surgery for the injury and will be transferred to Paris for an operation.

Stanaway graduated to FR3.5 with Lotus this season after claiming last year's German Formula 3 title and winning at Spa in the first weekend of a partial GP3 campaign.
