The South Island rugby team has beaten the North Island 32-24 in the first national match of its kind for 17 years.

The North - South match held at the covered Forsyth Barr stadium in Dunedin was planned as a fundraiser as part of the package to rescue to the Otago Rugby Football Union from liquidation in March.

The southern team made up players from the Crusaders and Highlanders super rugby franchises ran in winners over the North by 32 points to 24.

After a slow start to ticket sales, the official attendance was seven-thousand-four-hundred.
