Ireland eliminated from Euro 2012

Ireland are the first team to be eliminated from contention in the Euro 2012 football tournament after a 4-0 thrashing by Spain in Gdansk.

Fernando Torres netted twice, while David Silva and substitute Cesc Fabregas also struck for the World Cup holders and European champions to put Spain level on four points with Croatia at the top of the group.

Croatia and Italy drew 1-1, leaving the Italians on two points for their second draw.

In the final group matches Spain and Croatia meet and Italy take on Ireland.
