Team New Zealand on its yacht Camper has survived stormy conditions to finish second on leg eight of the Volvo Ocean Race from Lisbon Portugal to Lorient France.

The New Zealanders crossed the line about an hour behind leg winner Groupama in conditions that pushed the boats and their sailors to the limit.

Team New Zealand's Rob Salthouse says waves were washing over the deck of the boat which at one point knocked skipper Chris Nicholson from his position at the wheel.

Yesterady, damage to the rudder of Telefonica forced the Spanish entry to fall from the lead to 5th place.
