US Open champion happy not to be in last group

The American golfer Webb Simpson says not playing in the final group definitely worked in his advantage after winning his first major at the US Open yesterday in San Francisco.

The 26 year old has now risen nine places to number five in the world rankings and became the 15th straight different major championship winner with a one stroke victory at the Olympic Club.

Simpson says he always believed in himself, but the pressure-cooker environment of a golf major can never be underestimated.

The top four in the rankings remain unchanged - Luke Donald, Rory McIlroy, Lee Westwood and Tiger Woods.
