The New Zealand distance runner Kimberley Smith showed great form leading up to the London Olympic Games marathon winning a 10-kilometre road race in Boston in record time.

From the start Smith stuck with the group of elite women which included Ethiopia's Aheza Kiros, making a break at the six-kilometre mark, before going on to victory in a time of 31 minutes and 36 seconds.

The 30-year-old who lives in Providence, Rhode Island, cut 22 seconds off Kenyan Caroline Kilel's race record, set in the inaugural event last year.

Smith was just three seconds outside Anne Hannam's New Zealand 10-kilometre road record set in Kentucky in October 1988.
