The condition of the New Zealand cyclist Michael Torkler, who was seriously injured on Saturday during a suspected hit and run in California, has improved.

The Pure Black racing team member was training for up coming races in the United States, after winning the Tour of Borneo in May.

Torkler was in a critical condition but the team's business director, Greg Cross, says his condition has continued to improve, and doctors are happy with his progress.

Torkler's family has arrived in California to be with him.
