Phelps seals eighth London berth

The American swimming great Michael Phelps will again compete in eight events at his Olympic swansong in London.

Phelps won eight gold medals in Beijing four years ago and the 14-time Olympic gold medallist has now qualified for a fifth individual event, along with the three relays.

The 27-year-old powered home over the last lap to win the 100 metres butterfly final for his fourth straight win on the penultimate night of the US trials in Nebraska.

Arch rival Ryan Lochte sliced half a second off his personal best time to finish third in the 100 butterfly, an event he normally does not swim, but missed out on another berth for London with only the top two qualifying.

Tyler McGill grabbed the other place in the butterfly with second place.
