Maria Sharapova, the French Open champion and top seed at Wimbledon has become the first major casualty of week two at the All England club.

On yet another rainy, windswept day the Russian star produced a performance as grey as the weather in losing 6-4 6-3 to Germany's world number 16 Sabine Lisicki.

Another German, Angelique Kerber humbled the Belgian star Kim Clijsters 6-1 6-1, and

the four-times champion Serena Williams scrambled through to the quarter-finals in three sets against the powerful Kazakh wild card Yaroslava Shvedova.

Williams will now face defending champion from the Czech Republic Petra Kvitova.

In the men's draw Roger Federer overcame back spasms to beat the Belgian Xavier Malisse in four sets, while Andy Murray was leading 7-5 3-1 against Croatia's Marin Cilic before rain sent them from the court number one.
