Birkenhead United and Manukau City are the surprise inclusions in the quarterfinals of the 85th ASB Chatham Cup, while Dunedin's big two made the most of home advantage to take their place among the last eight.

Birkenhead, current leaders of the Northern League's first division, swept aside Premier League visitors Hamilton Wanderers on Auckland's North Shore with a 4-1 win that booked their first ever appearance in the quarterfinals of the 89-year old competition.

Second division Manukau City pulled off the shock of the round, upsetting first division Papatoetoe in a dramatic 4-3 fourth round penalty shootout win on Saturday after scores were locked 1-1 after extra time.

Fellow underdogs Stop Out didn't fare as well in Wellington with Miramar Rangers bulldozing their way to a 4-nil win at Wakefield Park.

Both Dunedin teams in the round of 16 progressed into today's open national draw for the quarterfinals with Alistair Rickerby's first half goal the difference for Dunedin Technical against Christchurch's Western.

Caversham joined their cross-city rivals in the next round with a 4-2 victory over Cashmere Technical.

Lower Hutt City put paid to last year's beaten finalists Napier City Rovers at Fraser Park on Saturday with second half goals securing a 2-nil win.

In Auckland, Central United secured a 3-2 win over Three Kings United and Eastern Suburbs returned from Hamilton with a 1-nil win thanks to George Slefendorfas' 50th minute goal.
