Van Dyk plays despite death of mother

The Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic and Silver Ferns shooter Irene van Dyk played in Monday night's trans-Tasman competition netball match against the Northern Mystics, just hours after learning her mother had died.

The Magic won the match to advance to Sunday's final against the Melbourne Vixens.

Van Dyk's mother passed away in South Africa after a long battle with cancer.

She says her mother, also Irene, would have wanted her to carry on with the game as she's been a big supporter throughout her netball career.

Van Dyk will play in Sunday's final before heading to South Africa for her mother's funeral next week.
