On the eve of the final major golf championship of the year, it's been revealed that the U.S. Open champion Webb Simpson, one of a growing number of players using the controversial long putter, has started practising with a traditional short putter in anticipation of a possible rule change.
Keegan Bradley's victory at last year's US PGA Championship sparked an outbreak of players switching to long putters, with Simpson and then Ernie Els, at last month's British Open, also enjoying major success with the longer stick.
The game's governing bodies are expected to discuss the status of long putters next month, with a ban among the options being considered.
Meanwhile the USPGA championship starts tomorrow morning at Kiawah Island in South Carolina.
