The Bolton Wanderers midfielder Fabrice Muamba, who miraculously survived after he collapsed during an FA Cup match against Tottenham Hotspur last March, has retired from professional football on health grounds.

24-year-old Muamba's heart stopped beating for 78 minutes, but despite his amazing recovery there were always questions as to whether he could play again.

A trip to Belgium last week to seek medical advice from a leading cardiologist has led to his retirement decision.
