Junior Football Ferns beaten

The New Zealand women's football team has been eliminated from the FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup in disappointing fashion after losing 4-0 to Mexico in Japan.

After a 2-1 win over Switzerland and a 2-2 against eventual group winners Japan, the Junior Football Ferns just needed to avoid defeat to progress to the quarter-finals for the first time at an age group FIFA women's tournament and looked relatively comfortable at halftime with close to 70% of possession and the match scoreless.

However Mexico scored two minutes into the second half and the Ferns were left chasing for the rest of the match.

Coach Aaron McFarland says there's huge potential for the women's game in New Zealand to blossom and there's a lot of good role models even in this team for young girls to aspire to emulate, and hopefully the positives from this campaign will drive more growth and more success.
