The defending US Tennis Open champion Novak Djokovic and three-times winner Serena Williams have each dropped just two games against in leading a procession of top seeds into the second round of the year's final grand slam.
Joining Djokovic the world number two in advancing to the second round were fifth seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, sixth seed Tomas Berdych, and former champion Andy Roddick.
In the women's draw former world number one Caroline Wozniacki was a first round casualty while second seed Agnieszka Radwanska and fourth seed Serena Williams easily advanced.
Djokovic took just an hour and 13 minutes to trounce Italy's Paolo Lorenzi 6-1 6-0 6-1 in his first-round match although he did lose the first game when serving but went onto to win 18 of the next 19.
