The tandem cyclists Phillipa Gray and Laura Thompson have won New Zealand's third medal at the Paralympic games in London, a bronze in the one kilometre time trial.

The Southland duo clocked a time of one minute 11. 24 seconds, two seconds behind the silver medallists from Great Britain.

Australia claimed gold in a minute 8.91 seconds.

Coach Brendon Cameron chose to adopt a larger gear for the race which helped the pair power down the final 500 metres as their competitors petered out.

The pair is now looking to climb further up the dais on Sunday, when they compete in their favoured event, the 3000 metre pursuit.
