Southern make NZ hockey history

6:24 pm on 1 September 2012

The Southern men's hockey side have created history by qualifying for their first-ever final in the National Hockey League.

Southern held their nerve to win a nail-biting sudden death penalty shoot-out 5-4 against Capital at Auckland's Lloyd Elsmore Hockey Stadium, after two periods of extra time and a normal penalty shoot-out couldn't separate the two sides.

Southern will face defending champions Auckland in tomorrow's final after the home side held out their neighbours North Harbour 4-2.

The defending women's champions Auckland will face unbeaten Canterbury in tomorrow's final, after the Cantabrians held out a determined North Harbour to win 2-1 while Auckland crushed Midlands 7-0.
