Evans wins GP3 title

The teenage New Zealand racing driver Mitch Evans has won the 2012 GP3 Series but he had to sweat on other results after another mishap in the last race of the season in Italy.

The rookie championship leader had to retire on the weekend's first race after starting from pole position at Monza and then suffered a puncture in the final race while his rival, the German driver Daniel Abt who won Sunday's race, had to win today to pip the 18-year-old Aucklander to the title.

Abt was leading Tio Ellinas for most of the race but the Greek Cypriot driver passed Abt with less than two laps remaining to deny the German the points he needed, handing Evans the GP3 crown by just one and a half points.
