Andy Murray has become the first British man since Fred Perry in 1936 to win a grand slam title after taking the US Open crown with a thrilling 7-6 7-5 2-6 3-6 6-2 victory over defending champion Novak Djokovic.

The 25-year-old Scotsman, who had lost his four previous grand slam finals, finally found the winning formula in New York to collect his maiden major crown and end 76 years of heartbreak for British tennis fans.

Murray was relieved to have finally shaken off the shackles of being the best player to never have won a grand slam.

Murray is the first man since John McEnroe in 1980 to win the first two sets, lose the next two and win the fifth to claim a US Open title.
