11:47 am on 13 September 2012

The racing horse Mufhasa has been named horse of the year at the New Zealand Thoroughbred awards in Hamilton.

It's the second time the horse has taken out the prestigious award following his win in 2010.

Votes were overwhelmingly in his favour, totalling 37 of a possible 43.

Mufhasa also won the champion sprinter category.

Other winners on the night were Trevor McKee who received the award for outstanding contribution to racing, while last year's horse of the year Jimmy Choux was named champion middle-distance horse.
