Crashes proved costly for New Zealand cyclists Julian Dean and Hayden Roulston in the road race at the World Championships in the Netherlands.

Dean was brought down on lap seven of 10 of the 267-kilometre ride and it took more than four minutes to extract himself from the pileup.

Roulston was also forced to withdraw after he was hit from behind which smashed his derailler.

Jesse Sergent, who was there to support Dean and Roulston, also eventually pulled out.

Belgian champion Philippe Gilbert won the race.
