Windies through to Super Eights after abandoned match

6:08 am on 25 September 2012

The West Indies have qualified for the Super Eights stage of the World Twenty20 Cup after their Group B match against Ireland was abandoned due to rain in Colombo.

Ireland made 129 for 6 in their 19 overs before heavy rain prevented the West Indies from starting their innings.

Both teams received one point each, but the West Indies joined Group B winners Australia in the next round due to a superior net run-rate over the Irish.

Master batsman Chris Gayle turned star performer with the ball with two wickets.

The last group match is tonight with Bangladesh playing Pakistan.

The first Super Eight match is on Thursday with the Black Caps playing hosts Sri Lanka.
