White Ferns lose World T20 opener

The New Zealand women's cricketers have lost their opening match of the ICC World Twenty20, falling by seven wickets to the West Indies in Sri Lanka.

The White Ferns lost the toss and were put into bat at Galle, making 117 for nine off their 20 overs, captain Suzie Bates topscoring with a knock of 32 off 34 balls.

The West Indies completed their pursuit with 12 balls in hand.

The New Zealanders play their next match against South Africa overnight Friday-Saturday.

South Africa kicked off their campaign with a comfortable six-wicket victory over hosts Sri Lanka.
