Top umpire stepping down

7:14 am on 27 September 2012

Australia's premier cricket umpire Simon Taufel has announced he'll be quitting the international circuit following the Twenty20 World Cup in Sri Lanka.

Taufel will step down from the game's elite panel of umpires to take over a new role as the ICC's Umpire Performance and Training Manager.

The 41-year-old Sydneysider stood in his first one day international in 1999 as a 27 year old, and he was just 29 when he made his test debut.

He was named the ICC's Umpire of the Year for five consecutive seasons from 2004-08.

Taufel is looking forward to spending more time with his wife and children.
