The Wellington Phoenix have started their 2012 A-League football season with a win, beating Sydney FC 2-0 at Westpac Stadium in Wellington on Saturday night.
Debut goals to Stein Huysegems and Louis Fenton either side of half-time were enough for the Phoenix who were dominant throughout the game, playing an exciting attacking brand of football.
Huysegems was put through to a one-on-one with the Sydney keeper and he took his chance well, calmly sliding the ball into the bottom corner.
Then in the second half, 19-year-old Louis Fenton scored a stunning diving header to secure the game.
The Phoenix managed the threat of Sydney's marquee signing Alessandro Del Piero well as the midfield battler Manny Muscat put in a man-of-the-match performance constantly winning possession and setting up both the goals.
Over 12,000 fans turned out to watch New Zealand's only professional football side kick off their A-League campaign in style.
