The Africa Cup of Nations qualifier between Senegal and Ivory Coast in Dakar was abandoned after home fans went on the rampage as their team slipped towards defeat.
Violence erupted at the Stade Leopold Sedar Senghor 15 minutes from the end of the second leg of the tie when Ivory Coast skipper Didier Drogba scored his second goal of the night from the penalty spot.
Fires were set in the stands while stones, chairs and bottles were reportedly thrown at the players.
The 2-0 scoreline on the night made it a 6-2 lead on aggregate for Ivory Coast, putting them comfortably into the 2013 finals to be staged in South Africa and eliminating Senegal.
As missiles rained down on the pitch, and the players took refuge in the centre-circle, security forces used tear gas to quell the trouble.
The trouble overshadowed qualification for Ghana, Mali, Morocco, Nigeria, Tunisia and holders Zambia who are all through to the finals in South Africa in January.
