The All Blacks Sevens lost their last pool game at the opening World Series event at Gold Coast, South Africa winning 31-21.
The New Zealanders still make the Cup quarter-finals, where they'll play Argentina, after beating the USA 19-7 first up then seeing off Canada 28-21.
