The Swedish golfer Peter Hanson capitalised on some early mistakes by his Ryder Cup team-mate Rory McIlroy to hold on for a one-shot victory over the world number one at the BMW Masters in Shanghai.

Hanson held onto his third round lead to capture his second European tour title in three events, and move into second place behind McIlroy on the European money list.

The 35-year-old Hanson collected $2 million, the biggest payday of his career, for beating a field that included four of the top five players in the world rankings.

Michael Campbell tied for 30th and he's up to 80th on the European money list with $466,000.
