New Zealand swimmer Matthew Stanley has begun his FINA World Cup campaign with victory in the 400 metres freestyle on the opening night in Beijing.

The 20-year-old Olympian was part of a strong New Zealand outing on the first night of the Asian leg of the series - Glenn Snyders won the 50 breaststroke and Melissa Ingram took the silver medal in the 200 backstroke.

Stanley's winning time of 3:40.74 was only 34/100ths of a second off Danyon Loader's 17-year-old national record.
