The Black Caps' opening one day cricket international against Sri Lanka in Pallekele was abandoned without a ball being bowled.
The washout follows a seriously rain-affected Twenty20 game at the same venue two days ago when only 16 overs were bowled.
The five-match ODI series now moves to Colombo for the next two games on Sunday and Tuesday.
