Auckland City has kicked off the national football Premiership with a 5-2 rout of visitors Canterbury at Kiwitea Street.

Adam Dickinson's double and Chris Bale's volley made it look like a benefit for the hosts but Canterbury's Julyan Collett pulled one back to make it 3-1 to City at half-time, then Aaron Clapham slotted a penalty to make it a one-goal game with just over 20 minutes to go.

But Albert Riera restored City's two-goal buffer then Emiliano Tade rounded out the scoring with a deflected 89th minute strike.
