World cricket's leading run scorer Sachin Tendulkar has become the first Indian sportsman to be honoured with membership of the Order of Australia.

Australia's Arts Minister Simon Crean has conferred the award on 39 year old master batsman at a ceremony in Mumbai, Tendulkar's home city, after it was announced by Prime Minister Julia Gillard during her visit to India last month.

Tendulkar was recognised "for his service to Australia-India relations by promoting goodwill, friendship and sportsmanship through cricket".

The West Indies batting star Brian Lara was awarded the same honour in 2009.
