Mark McGwire hired by Dodgers

Mark McGwire, whose former single-season home run record was sullied by an admission of steroid use, has been named as hitting coach of the Los Angeles Dodgers baseball team.

McGwire became the first player to hit 70 homers in a season while with the St. Louis Cardinals in 1998.

In 2010 -- after he'd been hired by St. Louis as their hitting coach -- he admitted that he used steroids off and on for nearly a decade, including during his record-setting season.

Under McGwire's direction, the Cardinals led the National League in batting average (.273) and runs scored (762) during their run to the 2011 World Series title.
