The in-form New Zealand golfer Michael Hendry again proved his class by matching strokes with the favourites Ian Poulter and Adam Scott on the opening day of the Australian Masters in Melbourne.

The trio posted five under par 67s to share second place at Kingston Heath, two strokes behind the surprise leader, 38-year-old Queenslander Matthew Guyatt - who only recently returned to the pro circuit after 10 years as a club professional.

Two other New Zealanders, Mahal Pearce and Jared Pender, had rounds of 69 and 70 respectively.
